Inclusion: Fostering Diversity and Acceptance for a Better Society

Inclusion means that people do not receive special status just to have their needs met. Instead, the underlying idea is to make diversity within mainstream society the norm. The goal is for everyone to be unique in their own way, actively contributing to diversity. Consequently, everyone can participate as they see fit and play an active role in decision-making. However, for this to become a reality and not just a wish, the conditions of societal life must be analyzed and further developed, as this is the only way to achieve the necessary progress.

The foundation for achieving this goal is the acceptance of differences. The next step is to enable participation and empowerment. This also means critically questioning existing hierarchies. What does this mean? In our case, it means that we do not develop products that are not requested by a person with a congenital or acquired disability. In practical terms, this has meant conducting surveys to verify where the greatest need exists.

Inclusion: A Societal Foundation for Equality and Acceptance

Inclusion is the basis of a society where people can live and work with social security. In places where inclusion is intended to succeed as a socio-political guiding principle, specialized institutions such as support centers are not necessarily rendered obsolete. However, these institutions must actively support the process of inclusion while reflecting on themselves.

In society, people often experience exclusion and discrimination based on ascribed individual and social attributes. To diminish discrimination, it is necessary to raise awareness of exclusionary behavior and actively work towards reducing discrimination. A consistent reduction of societal barriers is imperative. This also requires interdisciplinary engagement and cooperation across fields, spanning from early childhood through youth to adulthood, from birth to old age. The associated challenges should be clear and effectively implemented across all areas of action.

Inclusion is a process that affects all sectors of society and all individuals. This includes having an open interest in others and treating each other with respect. Effective collaboration, even among institutions with diverse users and stakeholders, can promote and drive this process forward.

Inclusion is both a goal and a process, and it takes time.

Inclusion represents a guiding principle that focuses on society and its institutions. The perspective should shift from individual persons to society and its institutions. The goal is to create conditions in which all individuals can develop according to their abilities and personal aspirations and live self-determined lives.
